What is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

* ED is an inability to maintain erection, but many men do not report erectile dysfunction (ED) to their partner, or physician, due to social stigmas associated with bedroom performance. A Johns Hopkins study revealed that over 18 million men in the U.S. over the age of 20 experience difficulties having and maintaining an erection.

What are Signs & Symptoms of ED?

* Erectile Dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is the inability to maintain an erection long enough and firm enough for sexual intercourse. ED occurs when blood flow to the Corpora Cavernosa ( chambers of the penis), is decreased due to vascular disease or blood leaks out due to loose collagen wall.

Erectile Dysfunction: - MEDICAL CAUSES

* Poor circulation due to a lack of blood flow to penis is the most common cause of ED, but Plaque and Damaged vessels can also restrict circulation.

* Decreases testosterone hormone, are common causes of erectile dysfunction, but kidney and liver disease may also be the cause of hormone imbalance.

* Psychological difficulties can make it difficult for a man to achieve an erection, but anti-depressant medications may worsen impotence as well.

* Peyronie’s disease is bending or curvature of the penis, or narrowing of the penile shaft due to scarring, which can cause circulation problems in the penis.

* High cholesterol can damage the blood vessel linings in the penis, restricting blood flow and preventing the penis from filling with blood.

* Metabolic syndromes consisting of (Hypertension, Pre-diabetes, Diabetes, Elevated Triglycerides, Central Obesity, and low HDL) can cause blood vessel inflammation and hormonal imbalances that can lead to ED.

* ED can result from Hypertension that disturbs erectile tissue function or the side effects of medications.

* Diabetes and Hyperglycemia can produce ED by affecting macro-vascular and micro-vascular structures, the nervous system, and blood vessel linings.

Erectile Dysfunction - LIFESTYLE CAUSES

* Obesity or lack of physical activity that accumulates fat in the body can cause a drop in active testosterone levels, as well as cardiovascular problems that are known to contribute to ED. Engaging in an active lifestyle can help with weight management, stress, anxiety, and depression – all of which help with other conditions and decrease the risk of developing ED.

* Smoking hardens the arteries, reducing blood flow to the penis and causing oxidative stress, resulting in erectile dysfunction. ED improves significantly after quitting smoking.

* Poor dental health, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, reported that men with severe periodontal disease were 3 times more likely to have erectile dysfunction.

* Alcohol can lower testosterone levels by decreasing blood flow to the penis, resulting in decreased sensation and hormonal imbalances, if consumed more than two drinks a day. Low testosterone from alcohol or drug abuse affects your libido and performance, potentially leading to further psychological ED worsening.

* Pelvic floor pressure as a result of Cycling and Horseback riding can result in nerve and vascular damage that may inhibit erections.

* Sleep apnea is also a major cause of ED, and was found to have a 69% association with ED in a German Study. Disruptions to breathing during sleep affect oxygen levels in the blood and hormone production, which can cause problems generating an erection.

ED Medication Treatment

* Most popular treatment options are Viagra (Sildenafil), Levitra (Vardenafil), and Cialis (Tadalafil) with 80% success rate. These drugs are classified as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE-5,) with temporarily help, and need to be taken 15- 30 minuts before sexual activity. Common side effects of PDE-5 inhibitors include headache, flushing, runny nose, stomach pain, back pain, indigestion, vision changes, and dizziness.
